GIFFORD YOUTH ORCHESTRA
DESIGNED TO BE A COMMUNITY RESOURCE
The Gifford Florida Youth Orchestra is a Community Project. We are not connected with any school, church, or other organization. We were organized at the request of Gifford Residents (primarily Annie Laura Powell), approved by the senior Gifford Civic Organization (The Progressive Civic League, under the Chairmanship of A. J. Harris), and originally funded by the Gifford Front Porch Initiative, Angelia Perry, Executive Director. We now depend on the goodwill financial donations from philanthropic organizations and individuals to continue our work in the underserved and under privileged and under employed Florida Community.
“I would teach children music, physics, and
philosophy; but most importantly music, for the
patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning” ― Plato
WHY A YOUTH ORCHESTRA IS HELPFUL TO CHILDREN
Recent research has documented the assets that are needed to
help adolescents develop. Irrespective of race and economic status, youth thrive when a community that provides:
These factors when combined with: commitment to learning, positive values and positive identity and the development of social skills improve the likelihood of student success. Critical social skills include: planning and decision making, ability to connect to others, ability to resist negative peer pressure and ability to resolve conflicts peacefully.

WHY THE GIFFORD FRONT PORCH REVITALIZATION COUNCIL
FUNDED THIS ORCHESTRA FROM 2003 - 2005
In 2003, when the original proposal was submitted to Front Porch, the Neighborhood Action Plan listed several goals for the Education Committee in the Community Goals Matrix. In our application for funding from that Council, we had to explain
"What will be the impact on the goals of the neighborhood action plan, if we were approved for funding?"
Following is our answer for then, and now:
A. In the Action In the Action plan, the Community Goals Matrix lists several goals that Gifford plans to reach by the year 2007, such as:
B. We know that all these goals shall be reached, but none of them, by themselves, will insure long range continuance of the goals of the Community if self esteem, pride in elf, self respect, and respect for the community are not instilled in the youth before they realize what’s missing in their community and how unrealistic may be the possibilities of changing their lot in life.
C. What is needed in the formula for reaching and maintaining the Gifford Community goals are various components of cultural development. Adding violin lessons to the early education of Gifford youth, with a cultural twist, can be a source of pride in accomplishment for self and appreciation for the Community that nurtures them. This sense of pride in community and pride in self will be an asset to the desires of the Gifford residents and their expectancy in reaching their goals for 2007. Even FCAT scores can improve because building self esteem in this project will carry over to self esteem in the classroom. Further, increasing a child’s self esteem in elementary years can help mold that child’s character which will be carried forward into life. This serves to create future generations who will maintain the outcome of the community goals.
WHY A YOUTH ORCHESTRA WAS APPROVED BY
THE PROGRESSIVE CIVIC LEAGUE OF GIFFORD, FLORIDA
The community of Gifford Florida is a tough community to grow up in. The families of Gifford experience economic and social stressors. The majority of the children are children of color. The median family income is 60% of the state median or $27,000. One in 5 families is below the poverty level resulting in a child poverty rate of 70% and many of the others are just above that line. More than half of the families are African American and 20% of household are headed by women.
Successfully raising children in this environment requires resources to supplement the families ….. social and cultural resources of the community. In the absence of such resource, youth are at risk of school drop out, delinquency and engagement in the local drug and gang culture. There are few opportunities for youth to secure the assets they need to become productive citizens. The Gifford Youth Orchestra is one such resource. It brings a strength and culture based approach to building the capacity and character of young people.
Although focused on music, the program works to build a range of skills and experiences for young people. Among the capacities developed are:
